Hyggelige city

Denmark is considered the happiest country in the world, triumphing over the 155 other countries surveyed. This is a distinction that the country has earned for seven consecutive years now. Scientists often argue extensively on best practise for measuring most societal factors, but when it comes to happiness, we see a recurring consensus; a mixture of good health, warm weather, low crime stats, high income and civic engagement, all equate to "happiness". We also ask subjects how frequently they experience both positive and negative emotions as an indicator. So why might it be that Danes regard their happy levels as higher? For a start, Danes have a stable government as well as low levels of public corruption and access to high-quality education & health care. That being said, the country does have the highest taxes in the world, but the vast majority of Danes are content with paying these as they believe that the return creates a better society.

Perhaps the most important factor in the Danes' high quality of life, however, is their value of the cultural construct “hygge”. This word refers to high-quality social interactions and can be used as a noun, adjective or verb. Hygge means intentional intimacy or “coziness” which happens when you have safe, balanced and harmonious shared experiences. In short, it’s about enjoying the simple and good parts of life together with people you care about. A cup of coffee with a friend in front of a fireplace or a summer picnic in the park. Families may hold a "hygge" evening that entails board games and treats, or friends might get together for a casual dinner with dimmed lighting, good food and easygoing fun. Spaces can also be described as "hyggelige" and a common way of telling a host thank you after a dinner is to say that it was "hyggeligt", meaning, good time.

I have chosen this “hygge” outfit for another wonderful day in the Danish capital. A black laborer jumpsuit with a black and white stripy t-shirt underneath. Matching these colours, I am wearing white socks with black classic Dr Martens shoes with a black bandana and sunglasses. The bright blue trench coat is the only colourful element and gives a beautiful contrast to the outfit. The little cross satchel is the perfect accessory to keep everything I need for a full day of tourism!
