Fashion has changed over the recent years. I have changed along with my taste and my style has evolved, but the message and main idea remain intact.

Many have dreamed of owning a Ralph Lauren suit, an Alexander McQueen jacket or a Balenciaga bag and yet there’s good alternatives for more affordable prices such as H&M Group or Inditex. Spending less and wearing a look inspired by a high-end brand we love so much is cooler. I get it if quality is your priority, but through this I endevour to show you simple tricks to get low-cost clothes that have the potential to look lux. In fact, the vast majority of people mix ordinary/lower-cost clothes with very expensive pieces, because the secret is in how the clothes are combined.

For a cheap item of clothing to hide its true value, it has to fit perfectly. Make sure that they are your size –unless your aim is to deliberately go oversize– to avoid wrinkles, creases and so on that would make the garment look of less quality and made-to-fit. You can add an expensive item of clothing or accessory, and the rest of it at a low cost. This is the foolproof method. The key to give your look the touch you are looking for is the small details and they sure do make a distinctive difference. This, in plain terms, means that currently Fashion demands the very striking garments to be insignificant, so opting for neutral colours such as beige, white, grey, black or navy blue will keep you on the safe side. When a garment is discreet and elegant, labels almost “disappear”.

I stress on the difference, often, minor elements can make and this is no exception, so buttons are your best ally to transform a low-cost garment into one you’d find in a boutique. You can also add pins, elbow patches, medals, you name it. That’s all it takes, sometimes, to personalise an item and a great inspiration of designs is big, branded jackets; for instance think the likes of Armani or Balmain. Sunglasses are always a go-to option even when there is no sun, and the reason always is because they have the power to launch one’s look to the top making us appear mysterious. In addition, sunnies are a forever essential going any outfit and speak for themselves, making a statement.

Use pointed or very prominent shapes. Everything that has a well-defined, geometric shape is synonym to success. That piece will instantly look more couture, therefore, your look will too. For example, shoulder pads, square bags, straight-cut suits and so on. Pay attention to the inside of the garment; low-cost clothing is usually not lined, because it is a way of reducing the cost of coats, jackets, vests, etc. In short, this reveals whether the cost of the garment was high or low, though having said that, your local tailor/seamstress is your best bet, who for a fair price, can transform an inexpensive item to an elevated and unique piece.

One of these statement garments is this vintage Givenchy coat. An oversized, navy outerwear that simply has the power to take any look to a whole other level no matter how worn, along with a hoodie perhaps and a pair of trainers or more formally styled with a suit and a tie. Here, I am wearing it with a grey, cropped sweater and a vintage, bandana in brown tied around the neck. The bottom features an also vintage piece, tailored, uniform trousers in camouflage. The white, navy and red, bowling shoes matching the white socks relaxes the look making it quite quirky and giving a Thom Browne vibe. One of my favourite high-fashion brands. The navy, pinstripe blazer goes beautifully with the combination and the matching coat. I am carrying a newspaper-looking tote bag and to add more colour to the look I am throwing in the mix a vivid, florescent blue sailor beanie and gloves in the same shade.
