Do you know when you feel you just need a break?
I took that break in Morocco. One of my best friends told me she would travel on her own through the country and I could join her. Morocco has always been on my top 10 countries to visit in my bucket list, so it was only a question of time when I would end up touching the sand of its dunes. My friend is adventurous, funny, incredibly sociable and full of love for Arabic culture and customs and she is crazy... very crazy. I couldn't see it more clear. She was already travelling the country for 10 days when we've met in Marrakesh. We spend a few days in the city and went to Zagora and the "small desert". If you want to see high and big dunes, it needs to be Merzouga, but we had no time for it. It was here nearly an eight hours drive towards the south over the Atlas mountains. Raw, beautiful cause of the landscape and painful cause of the curves, almost nonstop. I would say intense. We crossed parts of the desert by camel while the sun was setting and arrived at the camp by darkness. Good tajine, a bonfire, drumming and locals singing made it very traditional. There was a moment in the evening, my friend and I were laying down on a dune, the sand underneath, a light breeze around us mixing its sound with the smacking of the camels. We talked and reflected about each other and life, our life. Looking up to the most beautiful sky, black with full of white icy stars, like diamonds, which I have never seen this clear before. For sure one of the most memorable memories ever.
Early in the next morning, after a freezing night (the desert can be very cold at night) we started the way back north, stopping for a couple of days in Ouarzazate, the film city of Morocco. Also known as "The door of the desert", It is located in the middle of a bare plateau south of the High Atlas Mountains and as an important holiday destination as a base for excursions across the Draa Valley and into the desert. The fortified village (Ksar) of Ait Benhaddou west of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, we met Fatima and her friends, tree local girls, who are also into fashion and photography. They kindly showed us the most beautiful places in the town. I send them a warm hug if they ever read this. The Ouarzazate area is a noted film-making location, with Morocco's biggest studio inviting many international companies to work here. Films such as Lawrence of Arabia (1962), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), The Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000), which is one of my films ever, or Kingdom of Heaven (2005) were shot here, as was a part of the TV series Game of Thrones.
I created this outfit, guided by the colours of the desert. A green linen shirt with a white basic t-shirt underneath, beige trousers with matching socks and a brown knotted leather belt. The long stripy cardigan in grey tones gives me the oriental look that I love. It is extra-large size as I wanted an oversize effect and rolled it up sleeves making it more relaxed look. The plaid scarf in black and green is the last touch to the outfit falling from my shoulders giving a smart casual look.
