The must colour in the city

London is a fun, vibrant and lively city without a question but we cannot say it is quite light or colourful. Mostly not, at least. Under the grey sky, everything looks darker or faded. However, if there is one bright colour that predominates, then it is the Poppy Red. Colouring not only the famous telephone and post boxes, the double-decker buses but also the uniforms of the Buckingham Palace guards. You can find it as a red circle in the underground logo and first and foremost as part of the Union Jack, so literally everywhere. Red has always been the signal colour for power, leadership, strength, determination and also action. So remembering the colonial and imperial international connections of Great Britain it is no surprise to find it all over the place. But when I compare it to the Spanish or Basque flag which both also contain red as a major ingredient the synonyms might apply to many countries.

Also not to forget: the Red Poppy. A big national symbol to commemorate military personnel who have died in the battlefields of northern France and Belgium in the First World War. Poppies had been growing on the battlefields after the war when nature could restore and be meadows and fields again instead of death traps. Nowadays everyone can wear a poppy on their lapels or dresses made out of paper, felt, fabric or porcelain. The city decorates monuments with garlands of poppies and plants some in gardens and parks. During the current festive days red just cannot be absent, but the meaning is a lot different: warmth, brightness, fire, together, vibrancy.

I join this colour with this gorgeous red coat. Perfect for the winter season as it is very warm but at it also looks quite different and stylish. It is long, full of military details with insignia and chunky metal buttons. The design won’t go unnoticed. It is the main piece of the outfit, the rest supports it with the contrast of black and white. I am wearing a stripy over-size shirt and a black knitted roll-neck jumper, both tucked inside the dark navy jeans. I am wearing it with black smart shoes and ivory plain socks. In this cold weather, it’s essential to wear a pair of gloves and I picked this black biker style ones to complete the look.

Merry Christmas!
