Retro-spective

Tartan is a vast kingdom and there is a world beyond the bold and memorable Royal Stewart tartan you see just about everywhere. Want something muted and understated? Feel like something neutral and earthy? With over five thousand tartan weaves available, even the most clueless of fashionista can find something that suits their tastes and the occasion. First, you must choose your cut wisely and check patterns aren’t slimming. You (or a tailor) could tuck the trouser leg in a bit with a small break over your shoe, this will offset the illusion of bulk from a tartan check. The trick is how you mix and matches the pattern. Pattern marriages rarely work, so your best course of action is to keep it simple. Keep the top half of your outfit anchored in block colours and let the tartan pants take centre stage. Some print combination they really work, and I love when people encourage themselves to mix and break the “rules” but if you want the tartan to be the statement piece of your look, keep it simple.

To start off, I am wearing a tan colour vintage bomber in fine suede. I was looking for outerwear in this colour for some time as it is very easy to combine with other garments and it looks great with pretty much anything. I also love its detail, like the retro print of the linen and the double lapel. Here I am wearing it with navy colour roll neck t-shirt and wool cardigan tucked into tartan trousers. Straight cut trousers in green and navy which I like rolling up the bottom side showing the sock. The vintage shoes match perfectly with the colour and the style of the bomber. The triple colour gloves go very well with these two garments and the yellow cashmere scarf. The leather pouch is a great touch to complete the outfit. It’s a very simple design but I love the newspaper print it has. The perfect easy accessory to take it with you no matter what style you are wearing.
