Bremen is a great place to visit – even the Town Musicians in the fairytale by the Brothers Grimm knew that! It was 200 years ago that the story of the donkey, dog, cat and rooster first appeared in the books. They set out on their journey together, with the city of Bremen as their destination. Each of the animals in this story is forced to give up on something they are good at and enjoy doing, yet by leaving their comfort and seeking something new they find something better, even if it isn’t as expected. The story teaches the conflicts of age, death and change.
Bremen, which together with the city
of Bremerhaven makes up Germany’s smallest federal state, is a vibrant urban
centre. This is where the traditional meets the modern, and metropolitan living
meets north German hospitality. It’s very easy to move to this city as you
never have to travel too far or for too long. Here, history, culture and life’s
little pleasures are closely interwoven – and are often only a ‘short walk’
apart. The historic market square is the heart of the city centre. Here, the
stone-statue of Roland, a symbol of municipal independence stands facing St
Peter’s Cathedral. This statue forms a UNESCO World Heritage site together with
the magnificent town hall. Follow Böttcherstrasse street, an architectural
highlight full of surprises, to the Schlachte Embankment looking out on the
river Weser. The famous sailing ship Alexander von Humboldt, now serving as a
restaurant and hotel, is also moored here. From there it’s only a short walk to
the Schnoor quarter, the medieval old town with its narrow lanes and
picturesque little houses. I stayed in the vibrant Viertel and I highly
recommend the area as it’s Bremen’s on-trend quarter which looks back on a long
tradition. Its many bars, clubs and restaurants are teaming with creatives,
students and other late-night revellers.
I am wearing a basic electric-blue
sweater matching the stripy scarf. I love this pinstripe jeans rolled-up with
the brown and blue, leather ankle boots. I have chosen this vintage bomber in
beige and brown colours, perfect for the city’s low temperatures thanks to
its fur lining; equally stylish and cosy. Having spent long hours of outdoor
sightseeing, a pair of gloves is necessary. Mine are in grey colour adding an
extra colour to the outfit along with the textured cap. Finally, I am wearing a
practical and chic crossbody bag in brown, matching the rest of the look, perfect
to carry the style and the postcards I bought.
