One of the most curious phenomena in the textile world is to understand
the way in which fashion is evolving to the point that a regular everyday or a
very particular element can be worn as part of an outfit to go out for a walk
or completely the opposite, a party. Undoubtedly, the world of fashion is
ever-changing and trends are renewed every year, but lately it seems that
instead of generating new images, trends from the past are transformed,
although updated to current aesthetic standards.
The reason why the massively followed school uniform sensation has been reintroduced as a trend almost always had to do with the world of entertainment. That being a film or a series as the main influence or worse, a soap opera (no judgment). For example, one of the most popular outfits or at least the one with which we relate Japan, is school uniforms, and more specifically mostly the girls’. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, television globally was replete with Japanese animation programs. Many of them aimed at children or adolescents and therefore their characters oscillated that age and of course the most common environment was school, therefore the most common clothing of these characters was school uniforms. Shows like Sailor Moon or Sakura Card Captor became very popular and children wanted to wear the same clothes they had seen on the television. In the 1990s, series and soap operas targeting the teenage audience began to be produced. Again, popular characters who wore the very uniforms appeared on the screen, not only within school but throughout whole episodes regardless of their activities on the script. This strengthened the trend, causing the majority of those youngster fans not only to imitate the style, but also to appropriate it and modify it by wearing it with other clothes. What came to solidify the trend were up and coming music stars i.e. Britney Spears and her popular "Hit me baby one more time” skyrocketing the followers’ desire to wear it too. The trend managed to go further and get a different twist. Adopting a brand new, more attractive model to young people gave the opportunity to wear a seemingly boring and restrictive garment in the way they wanted which was the key to the success of the school uniform trend.
Who has not wanted to have the outfits that appear in Gossip Girl? Pleated pants, white shirts, collared sweaters, blazers in the corporate colours of the school and more clothes that made the school uniform look super chic and full of style. Dare to wear an oversized sweater over a shirt and break the sobriety of your look by adding shorts. You will get a nostalgic outfit, but full of glamor. Regarding the collars, the white and blue tones were a school classic and the blazer is a must and thanks to its versatility and comfort you can pull off incredible looks. Alternatively, why not put together a total look of patterned prints to pay tribute to that characteristic school uniform?! The trend of wearing trousers-blazer-coat of the same colour and texture is getting stronger, especially for this fall season. I am wearing a double-breasted, grey blazer with a subtle check print. It goes beautifully with the vintage tapered, ivory shorts and the baby-blue, oversized shirt. The colourful diamond-print socks give the fun and more relaxed touch to the outfit in contrast with the classic navy and ivory brogues. All, harmoniously colour-matched with special attention to accessories.
