Revenge of the nerds

There is an unwritten rule that says that if you've been a nerd in high school, maturity will only bring you triumphs and great success. Now whether that’s true or not I don´t know, but the fact is that the fashion industry continues to vote in favour of the girls and boys in the last row in the classroom; the goths, the nerds, the arty and the manga or comic fans, the punks or techno listeners or those who are into archaeology.  These days I tend to embrace the following concept: “Leave behind the era in which you repressed the geek in you and allow your intellectual side to take over your style”. Having said that, it's time for you to add vests and bow ties to your wardrobe because being nerdy is on trend.

The use of prints is key to this style. Striking graphics, stripes, plaid, rhombuses or patterns are the most prevalent on shirts and t-shirts. Remember that this will be the base on which you will add contrasting blazers and trousers. After the shirt, don't forget a knitted vest or sweater and the blazer which is a basic garment of this style. They should preferably be of darker or solid colours to highlight the undergarments. Trousers will normally be those with pleats or slightly fitted. The advantage of this cut is that it goes with any body type, so you only have to worry about the colour you choose. Especially the cement grey, navy blue and black tones will become your greatest allies. Adding some vintage or classic shoes such as Oxfords or Brogues will achieve an impeccable style and as for accessories your best choice will be ties, bow ties, foulards, scarves and for the summer, dark sunglasses are essential.

I personally love the successful attempt by the fashion world to try to make a style like The Nerd, fashionable. Years and years discredited and popularly known as "the class fool" only for it to become unbeatable for many seasons now. It all started with Alessando Michele's for Gucci a few years ago, making the bold move to create a proposal where the new Gucci woman was born. A ‘nerd’ woman lacking of obvious and boring sensuality that had become the flagship of the house. In that show we saw horn-rimmed glasses, romantic bows, muslins and coats that well could have been taken from your grandmother's closet. Later, Rodarte and Just Cavalli delved a little more into the concept of nerd, directing their collections to a more “dark” aspect. There have always been goths and rockers in every classroom and if we talked about the style of the "witches" in the classroom I can't help but remember the movie "The Craft".

I am wearing a two-piece outfit, a navy pinstripe bomber with slim matching trousers. I am styling this with a beige knitted vest with some colourful details on the V-neck, a baby-blue shirt underneath with a tie with diagonal stripes in green and navy. The bottle-green colour Brogues make this outfit so classy with a beautiful mix between nerdy and sleek. I am carrying with me a very special accessory, that is a vintage doctor bag from the Victorian times I found at a bargain price for its quality and condition at a street market in Hamburg some time ago. I love mixing an old piece with smart looks or even with more casual for more contrast. This trend has become so relevant that it has led to uniform those who follow this new fashion by imitating their way of dressing, their hairstyles, musical tastes and even their behaviours. Today no one is going to make fun of a nerd.
