Diving in your parents’ and grandparents’ wardrobe can be a great opportunity to discover treasures that were long forgotten and unappreciated. It doesn’t come as a surprise that many more times than just once in our life we have gone to rummage through their wardrobe for clothes or accessories that we’ve seen on them and loved at first sight. The type I’m having in mind is normally so difficult, almost impossible, to find at any store to buy; additionally it also has a sentimental value that empowers and fills you with energy and between us that might be the very reasons why it’s always a little challenging to find those garments anywhere. Some of them that most often attract my attention and I enjoy to try on are jackets and coats.
The perfect coat for this winter Season 2021 could be closer than you think. Specifically, in your father's wardrobe, as in my case, along with those classic-cut knitted waistcoats that are also very much in trend this season. I am talking about the style of coats that have increasingly been invading Instagram and that, on top of it, have found their way into the latest Zara’s ‘New In’ section and many other high-street fashion brands. Despite the design’s simplicity, it contains a series of distinct coordinates: a) it is oversized and has slumped shoulders, b) its colours are autumnal and discreet that gradate from chocolate brown to olive green, passing through the whole range of earth tones and c) it is a funnel neck coat!
Other star garments of the season you may, unknowingly, have at home are waistcoats. Regardless of what their style might be, it will be the first piece you will take out of your father's wardrobe and will also be the salvation of your looks. It is worth mentioning what we haven’t stopped seeing on social media is the rhombus print. Hated by some and loved by others, these geometric shapes will be your next obsession. Whether on waistcoats, sweaters or cardigans, the rhombus will be the epicentre of your outfits. By the same token, a nice blazer should never be missing from our wardrobe and if you manage to get the oversized your father no longer uses, you cannot ask for more. Like it or not the suits our parents wore, especially those used to go to work or for a special celebration, have stuck in our memory and some are an authentic jewel due to their retro design and great quality. You can also find a useful piece among your father's piles of shirts and t-shirts to give an extra push to the vintage vibe you’re going for. Besides, surely you have a lot of appreciation for more than one of these garments which make you reminisce about your youth or childhood. Speaking of shirts, if there is one that already saved many people’s looks in the 50s, 60s or 70s and that now also saves us on more than one occasions, it is the white shirt. Yes, plain white. I’ve talked about the importance of white shirts before and bringing it up again now. For formal days and events or to go to work but also equally for relaxed moments, the white shirt and its infinite reinterpretations, is now more fashionable than ever.
My dad gifted me with passing down this beautiful camel-colour, vintage coat a recently which he bought for himself over 30 years ago and it is still in immaculate condition. I love the very soft fabric as well as the belt and the slumped shoulders that enhance one’s silhouette. Underneath, I am wearing a vintage, British military jumper following the earthy colours of the coat in contrast with the ivory tie-dye trousers and the navy shoes in fine suede and leather fabric. The contrast of the stripy colourful socks makes it premium, lifting the whole look to its absolute quirk but still relaxed and yet elevated. The scarf and the leather gloves add more colours as seen, tinges of blue, beige, brown and green, beautifully matching the rest of the outfit.
